SUMMARY:Historical Society of Pennsylvania Presents The Changing Faces of Independence: Pennsylvania in the 1800s
DESCRIPTION:How has the makeup of who is an American changed since the American Revolution? How have the people in that changing face of America continuously reinvigorated and reasserted the founding ideals of the country? By examining the documents left by our ancestors in the time leading up to America’s 100th birthday\, this display will ask those questions of their descendants. This exhibit draws on collections at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. It will be curated in partnership with ethnic and genealogical societies that seek to connect Americans to their ancestors through research\, programs\, and networking opportunities. \nBy the time of the nation’s Centennial Celebration in Philadelphia in 1876\, enormous waves of German and Irish immigrants had arrived in Pennsylvania\, and significant migrations of free and enslaved people of African descent had moved from the South\, using the Underground Railroad and following Emancipation during and after the Civil War. What do the records of their lives suggest about how they saw their roles as Americans and as newly arrived Pennsylvanians?

DESCRIPTION:The Swarthmore College Department of Music presents Friday at Six\, a new concert series curated and hosted by composition and music technology professor Quinn Collins. Part performance\, part interview\, the series focuses on new music and the artists who bring it to life. \n  \nThe upcoming installment features composer and multi-instrumentalist Mel Hsu. A sonic painter of impossible worlds\, Mel often ventures from her classical roots as a cellist into unexpected\, cross-disciplinary collaborations. Mel composes and performs for film\, theater\, dance\, and poetry. Her work has appeared on WNYC\, at SXSW Film Festival\, Jacob’s Pillow\, Philadelphia Museum of Art\, The New Museum\, Edinburgh Fringe Festival\, Asian American International Film Festival and BAM “Puppets on Film” Festival. She has had the honor of performing alongside Eminem\, Mac Miller and Ani DiFranco. Mel is a spreadsheet nerd\, a slow reader\, and a shameless instigator of kitchen dance parties. \n  \nFriday at Six: Mel Hsu will take place on Friday\, January 30th at 6pm in the Lang Concert Hall on the Swarthmore College campus. 99 Whittier Pl\, Swarthmore\, PA 19081. The event takes place at SPIN Philadelphia and includes a silent auction where attendees can bid on the artwork created during the night. DESCRIPTION:Basic Information: \nShow:  Tongue & Groove Spontaneous Theater presents:  WHO \nDates & Times:  Fridays\, Oct 3\, 10\, 17\, 24 at 8pm \nLocation:  SideQuest Theater\, 2030 Sansom St \nTickets:  sidequesttheater.com \n  \nShort Description: In their show\, WHO\, Tongue & Groove improvises scenes and monologues exploring real life experiences\, both hilarious and heartbreaking\, inspired by written responses to the question ‘who are you?\,‘ anonymously submitted by the audience. \n  \nLonger Description:  For Tongue & Groove’s show\, WHO\, each audience member is given an index card\, a pen\, and the prompt: “beneath the typical identifiers — and in just one sentence — who are you?”  Encouraged to answer honestly\, the audience anonymously submits their responses\, which are randomly drawn by the actors and read aloud. The ensemble then spontaneously performs a montage of funny and touching scenes & monologues inspired by the audience’s personal descriptions. \nMid-show\, the ensemble chooses more cards to inspire a hilarious Speed Dating Game with a special twist you’ll wish you could use on your next date!
