SUMMARY:Philadelphia: For the People Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:250 years ago\, the Declaration of Independence affirmed that a government exists to serve the people. Although that affirmation has not been enforced with equal measure\, Philadelphians have fought to create a City of Brotherly Love. The city’s collective beauty is apparent in its parks and public art\, while infrastructure such as telephone lines and public transit are reminders of how Philadelphia has evolved to serve its people. As we reflect upon the city’s development\, its strengths and its shortcomings\, how can we best shape a future for Philadelphia’s people? \nObjects on display are from the Children’s Literature Research Collection\, Government Publications\, the Map Collection\, and the Print and Picture Collection. To learn more\, visit freelibrary.org/specialcollections and freelibrary.org/gpd. \nThis exhibition can be viewed in the Second Floor West Gallery of Parkway Central Library from May 2\, 2026 through January 2\, 2027.

SUMMARY:Paths to Independence: 1765-1787
DESCRIPTION:In 1763\, following the French and Indian War\, most American colonists cherished their place in the British Empire and expressed loyalty to King George III. Yet by 1776\, many of those same colonists were ready to declare independence\, denouncing the king as a “Royal Brute.” Paths to Independence explores how such a dramatic transformation in political allegiance and public sentiment occurred in just over a decade. \n \nFeaturing rare original documents from the Historical Society of Pennsylvania’s collections\, including letters\, pamphlets\, broadsides\, and drafts of the Articles of Confederation\, which was the first constitution of the United States\, the display traces the complex path to American independence. It highlights not only the perspectives of well-known figures such as Benjamin Franklin\, John Dickinson\, Thomas Jefferson\, John Adams\, and James Wilson\, but also the experiences and evolving views of ordinary Philadelphians.

SUMMARY:Free art show- A Likeness Now Seen
DESCRIPTION:May 1st – June 30th \nArtist reception- May 22nd 6-9pm \nBlack Moth Gallery presents a group exhibition exploring form as subject by contemporary artists. The collection of artworks addresses issues of self-identity\, body type acceptance\, intimacy and aging. Working in various mediums from timeless practices to exploring new materials and techniques\, artists demonstrate their appreciation of the human figure. Some exercise mastery of classic renderings of the subject while others seek expressive interpretations and inspirations of the all so familiar forms\, albeit infinitely unique. \n  \nThese modern examples of a classic motif naturally register with us because what we recognize is most familiar\, a variation of the material self. These are moments in the finite life of another being\, stilled and eternalized\, sometimes venerated. A story is told\, energy is felt\, and technical skills are admired. The intimacy of engaging a portrait or figure painting will always be reflective\, enticing\, and esteemed\, from the experience the of artist to that of the viewer. \n  \nA portion of the proceeds from this show will support Domestic Violence Center of Chester County. \n  \nInvited artists: \n\nJessica Bednarcik\nMashiul Chowdhury\nKatherine Fraser\nThomas Tustin\nTony Ward\nBarbara Zanelli

SUMMARY:Remembered Objects in Paper Mache (Spring 2)
DESCRIPTION:Class Description:\nHave you ever lost something special or maybe something special has lost its use? Your best winter hat? Your favorite VHS tape? We’re going to reference our own mental images of our remembered objects as we recreate them in paper mache. \nThis will be fun and fairly easy for all skill levels\, with a few challenging moments. Ages 5-105 would be able to handle this medium. \nStudents will sculpt a generalized form in 3 dimensions. They will mix color using acrylic paint and use 2-D color\, line and shape to define and characterize the generalized 3-D form. \nStudents will gain a sculpture that stands in for a lost object. \nTeacher Info:\nBorn 1984 in New York\, NY\, Sophie White lives and works in Philadelphia\, PA. Since adolescence in a rapidly transforming NYC at the turn of the millennium\, she has made small\, cityscape paintings from observation of familiar places at various stages of becoming unfamiliar. Colorful sculptures and experimental sound and performance work sometimes accompany her paintings\, mimicking the environment in which they were made. She holds an MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and a BFA from the Cooper Union School of Art. In 2025 she was the subject of a solo exhibit at the Philadelphia International Airport\, participated in 11 group exhibitions in Philadelphia and New York and was a nominee for the Pew Fellowship. \nInstagram – @sophie6598\nWebsite – SophieCWhite.com

SUMMARY:BalletX Festival at Highmark Mann
DESCRIPTION:Join BalletX at the Festival at Highmark Mann\, featuring the world premiere of The Four Seasons Reimagined – an epic love letter to Mother Nature that invites audiences into a living\, breathing world shaped by sound\, movement\, light\, and design. Composer and electronic music innovator Dan Deacon creates and performs a bold original score live on stage\, igniting an immersive landscape where the seasons pulse with urgency and wonder. Four visionary choreographers\, Morgann Runacre-Temple (Summer)\, Penny Saunders (Fall)\, Jamar Roberts (Winter)\, and Trey McIntyre (Spring)\, each bring a distinct season to life\, revealing nature as the driving force at the heart of the story: fragile\, fierce\, and magnificently alive. \nWith visually arresting costumes and scenic design by Emma Kingsbury and evocative lighting by Christopher Ash\, the production surrounds audiences in a fully realized sensory environment. Music unfolds in real time\, movement surges through shifting landscapes\, and light transforms the stage into a world in constant evolution. Inspired by Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons\, reimagined through a contemporary lens\, this groundbreaking collaboration dissolves the boundaries between performer and viewer\, drawing audiences into an intimate\, immersive journey through the beauty\, volatility\, and wonder of our planet. \nWe can’t wait to share this one of a kind experience\, including pre-show performances by dance organizations from across the region\, and the return of #OneDanceOnePhilly\, a joyful citywide movement where performers and audiences come together and dance. Check back in for our pre-show performance schedule! \nCo-commissioned with ArtPhilly’s What Now: 2026 Festival and Highmark Mann\, in honor of America250. Supported in part by Saratoga Performing Arts Center.
