SUMMARY:Free\, As One: Black Worldmaking in the Pennsylvania Abolition Society Papers Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with 1838 Black Metropolis\, the Historical Society of Pennsylvania presents Free\, As One: Black Worldmaking in the Pennsylvania Abolition Society Papers highlighting themes of Black self-determination and leadership from the 1770s onward in the abolition movement of the Mid-Atlantic region. Drawing from the Pennsylvania Abolition Society (PAS) collection and commemorating the 250th anniversary of its founding\, this compelling exhibit refocuses attention on abolition as a global Black-led political movement championed by the PAS. SUMMARY:Franklin Tree Planting at Carpenters' Hall
DESCRIPTION:On April 25 at 10 a.m.\, Ben Franklin will join the Carpenters’ Company\, OLIN\, Bartram’s Garden\, and the National Park Service to plant two rare extinct-in-the-wild “”Franklin trees”” in front of Carpenters’ Hall\, home of the First Continental Congress. \nThese Franklinia Alatamaha\, or Franklin trees\, were named in the 1700s by the namesake of Bartram’s Garden\, John Bartram\, a naturalist considered the “father of American botany\,” and his son William. The Bartrams collected seeds\, named the tree in honor of their family friend Ben Franklin\, and began cultivating the trees in Philadelphia. \nThe Franklin Tree is known for its large\, cream-colored flowers; glossy\, narrow leaves; deeply colored fall foliage with late-blooming blossoms; and bright yellow-orange pollen-producing stamens. Every Franklin tree alive today descends from the seeds originally cultivated at Bartram’s Garden by William Bartram and his family. These trees are extinct in the wild today and exist only in botanical gardens and arboreta. \nAlso assisting in the tree planting will be: State Rep. Mary Isaacson\, Kathryn Ott Lovell\, president and CEO of the Philadelphia Visitor Center\, and Jennifer Nagle\, vice president of special projects at the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau. \nFun facts: Carpenters’ Hall is the site of Benjamin Franklin’s Library Company of Philadelphia\, secret meetings between Benjamin Franklin\, John Jay\, Fancis Daymon\, and French emissary Julien Achard de Bonvouloir which led to French support of the colonists\, and The Franklin Institute’s first home.

DESCRIPTION:Museum for Art in Wood presents “Katie Hudnall: The Longest Distance between Two Points\,” the first museum-organized solo presentation of fine woodworker Katie Hudnall’s unique and captivating work. The exhibition features a series of sculptural works and a large-scale interactive installation created from salvaged wood that captures Hudnall’s eye for the absurdly mechanical and uncanny. Curated by Jennifer-Navva Milliken\, Hudnall’s unique and captivating work reveals a rare glimpse into the artist’s rich inner world.

The original storybook heroines are none-too-happy with the way they’ve been portrayed in today’s pop culture\, so they’ve tossed their tiaras and have come to life to set the record straight.
