Philadelphia: For the People Exhibition

250 years ago, the Declaration of Independence affirmed that a government exists to serve the people. Although that affirmation has not been enforced with equal measure, Philadelphians have fought to create a City of Brotherly Love. The city’s collective beauty is apparent in its parks and public art, while infrastructure such as telephone lines and public transit are reminders of how Philadelphia has evolved to serve its people. As we reflect upon the city’s development, its strengths and its shortcomings, how can we best shape a future for Philadelphia’s people?
Objects on display are from the Children’s Literature Research Collection, Government Publications, the Map Collection, and the Print and Picture Collection. To learn more, visit freelibrary.org/specialcollections and freelibrary.org/gpd.
This exhibition can be viewed in the Second Floor West Gallery of Parkway Central Library from May 2, 2026 through January 2, 2027.
