As you are well aware we offer information on things to do in Philly and most involve food, drinks, and entertainment. However, for those looking for a more hands-on experience, workshops are always a great idea. Whether it’s spinning clay, blowing glass, or stitching a design, there’s no shortage of fun workshops to check out. Perhaps one of the more interesting ones we came across is a workshop that teaches attendees how to build their own mid-century modern furniture.
That’s right, skip the Ikea trips and the only Anthropologie website browsing and roll up those sleeves. NextFab, the hub for makers, is offering public workshops to build staple home pieces including an MCM storage unit, a lounge chair, and wooden bench. Each class is five to six sessions (one per week) and will guide participants step-by-step to not only craft their very own quality furniture but to learn a new skill in the process.
“Design and build your own sleek and functional Mid-Century Modern-inspired furniture using CNC technology. In this hands-on series, you’ll learn the essentials of digital fabrication, from designing in Autodesk Fusion to setting up and cutting precision parts on our ShopBot CNC router. Master efficient modeling techniques, learn how to create toolpaths, explore joinery techniques suited for plywood construction, and gain confidence in assembling and finishing a furniture piece that blends form and function.
You’ll learn by recreating a flexible storage unit designed by your instructor, which you can easily customize to suit your needs and taste. You will complete the course with a custom-built storage unit ready for use in your home or studio,” the description for the storage unit reads. Each class is spearheaded by professionals and offers unlimited shop access. Classes do offer flexibility for those with busy schedules.
For those looking for other hands-on workshops, NextFab is also offering classes in jewelry design, drafting and sewing work pants, 3D game boards and more. So if you’re looking to have some fun and learn a new skill, check out nextfab.com/classes/ for class options.
