After 2 Years Twilight in the Gardens Returns to Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens

After two years, the Twilight in the Gardens series returns to the Philadelphia Magic Gardens (1020 South S.) on May 27th from 7-10 pm.  This event is BYOB so guests are encouraged to bring a blanket, snacks, drinks and picnic in the mosaicked labyrinth. There will be a live musical performance by percussionist Dendê Macêdo in the courtyard. At the craft tables, Teaching Artist Ivonne Pinto García will be leading a hands-on activity with cold porcelain (similar to putty). Using this material, which is non-toxic and air dries, guests can create incredibly personalized pieces with fine detail, such as jewelry and sculptures.

Visitors also have the chance to learn more about PMG through fun, casual self-guided tours of our mosaicked basement, and can check out Together Again: Mosaic Panels by Isaiah Zagar in our galleries.

Space is limited and they strongly recommend purchasing your tickets ahead of time. Proof of vaccination is required to attend this event. Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for students & seniors and $16 for PMG members and can be purchased here.

ABOUT THE MUSICIAN:

May’s performing artist is Dendê Macêdo, a percussionist, singer, composer, bandleader, teacher, and multi-instrumentalist. He’s been a professional musician since the age of 14, when he appeared in the frontline of Timbalada, Carlinhos Brown’s superstar percussion ensemble. Since 2001, he’s been developing his solo career, splitting his time between the US and Bahia and working with his folkloric group Ologundê and his flagship band Dendê & Band. He has provided workshops, clinics and residency programs throughout the US and Brazil. Dendê currently teaches regularly in the Philadelphia area.

ABOUT THE TEACHING ARTIST:

Our Teaching Artist for this Twilight event is Ivonne Pinto García, an artist and community organizer from San Martín Texmelucan de Labastida, in Puebla, Mexico. In 2005, Ivonne migrated to Philadelphia where she involved herself in the local cultural scene, assisting other artists and promoting Mexican culture. Ivonne recognizes art as being at the intersection of community and health; as such she has been critical in building strong support networks across the Mexican community of Philadelphia. She helps facilitate community members’ access to quality healthcare, education, expression, and wellness opportunities. As a grassroots organizer, Pinto has been a great advocate and supporter for institutions like Puentes de Salud, where she has volunteered for over ten years.
