A Drexel University Senior’s Photo Graced the Cover of Time Magazine!

In a recent article published by time magazine it was revealed that a Drexel University senior provided the image that Time Magazine used to capture the quarantine situation.  23-year-old photography major Hannah Beier was one of thousands of possible images that were considered.

Time Magazine journalist Katherine Pomerantz stated, “We received an incredible range of impressive portfolios, but were especially struck by the work of Hannah Beier, a 23-year-old photography major at Drexel University in Philadelphia. Her photographs provide an intimate look at how her friends and classmates are marking milestones and attempting to navigate their new normal.”

What is even more amazing is the fact that this was the very first time one of Hannah’s photos were published. Hannah was working on her senior thesis about the vulnerability of relationships and friendships in her life. Her objective was to use intimate in-person shoots to help with he project. However, due to the pandemic her subjects (friends & family) were held-up in quarantine across the country due to school and work closures.

This didn’t stop her from moving forward with her work, “Hannah was forced to shift her approach. But despite her new process—all photo shoots are now conducted virtually—she decided to maintain that intimate focus.”

Eventually her thesis project led to the photograph used by TIME which features her classmate Melissa Nesta and her boyfriend, Daniel Mosley.  The photo was taken at her home in Ft. Washington.

“Going forward I will remember that there are things in life that you cannot prepare for. It is what you take away from it, how you grow, and learn, and challenge yourself during those times that’s what matters.”    

Appropriately enough Hannah named her thesis “Time Apart.
