Deep Cuts from the Balkan Polyphonic Singing Repertoire with Eva Salina

This 3-hour public workshop is designed as an accessible yet immersive exploration of the breadth and depth of polyphonic harmonies from the Balkan Region. We start with simple two-voice songs from Serbia and Croatia, move into the transportive polyphony of Southern Albania, and end with the newer, yet still traditional, 3-part folk arrangements of the Bulgarian Women’s Choirs. Through the unfolding of an afternoon, together we will explore a variety of textures, feelings, and languages in these respective cultures, while discussing their larger socio-historical contexts and the various kinds of harmony they employ. All are welcome – curiosity and active listening are the only requirements for participation. Come and make friends with some new old songs!
