Now that summer is basically here it is time to spend more time outdoors. Whether you’re looking to engage in fitness activities, cookouts, or just nice long walks, Philly is very scenic in the summer months. However, there is one activity that many local Philadelphians overlook and that’s grocery shopping outdoors.
Don’t get me wrong grocery stores can be great but they can also contain a lot of processed foods and besides why not maximize your outdoor time and try something new. Outdoor famers’ markets are a great place to get fresh farm produce, juices, snacks, and even arts & crafts. Believe it or not, Philadelphia has an abundant amount of outdoor markets especially during the summer months. The majority of the farmers’ markets in the city are organized by the Philadelphia based non-profit organization The Food Trust. Essentially they are national non-profit organization that provides urban areas easy and affordable access to nutritional food.
For those looking to spark a healthy lifestyle or stay steadfast on a current healthy kick, this list will help you shop for fresh produce all over the city on just about any given day. Enjoy!
Rittenhouse Square Farmers Market
18th & Walnut | Saturday’s 10 am – 2 pm| Open Year-Round
This is the grand daddy of all Farmers’ Markets in Philly. Open year-round, this market pretty much engulfs the entire Rittenhouse park. There is pretty much nothing you can’t get here. From fresh seafood, farm fresh vegetables and fruit to locally grown herbs and spices. This is almost like they took the Reading Terminal and put it outside. Everything is local and the folks that run the stands are there every Saturday morning rain or shine, so there is no excuse not to get fresh produce. For the summertime only this market will also be present on Tuesdays.
Fitler Square Famers’ Market
23rd & Pine | Saturday’s 9 am – 2 pm | Open Year-Round
This quaint market is also open year-round. However, it is a fraction of the size of the one located on Rittenhouse. Although more on the “boutique” side it’s still a great place to stop and get fresh produce. With less hustle and bustle this market located in a quiet section of the city that offers better parking and easier access than it’s larger counterpart. So if you’re in a hurry or just do not like large crowds, this is a perfect market to pick up fruits, vegetables, as well as awesome baked goods.
