No Passport Needed! Destination Dogs is Serving Up Kangaroo, Python and Other Exotic Meats!

Lately it would have to take something extra special to raise our eyebrows when it comes to new restaurants.  For the most part we’ve seen it all and tasted most of it. However, a new spot opened up lowkey in Washington Square West.  With no grand opening, Destination Dogs opened its doors in what is now formally the Farmer’s Cabinet (1111 Walnut St.)  Now a hot dog spot doesn’t scream “you gotta eat here,” but this place is the exception.

destination-dogs2Obviously the attention grabber was the word spreading about the exotic dogs this place was serving up.  Among the various delicacies include kangaroo, python, alligator and duck.  Pretty much most of the meats you might find on shows like Fear Factor or Strange Foods.  For the adventurous eater or a person looking to cross off something on their bucket list, this is the place to be.

Staying true to their name, Destination Dogs boasts a fun and cool airport vibe/theme. There’s a menu board that mimics a departure board, staff decked out in stewardess gear and menu items that represent various locations around the globe.  Looking for an Asian experience? Try the “One Bite in Bankok” (python sausage, cucumber salad, chili sauce and crushed peanuts).  Perhaps you’re looking for a little fun down under? “The Underdog” is a great choice (kangaroo sausage, frizzled onions, vegemite aioli).  Or maybe you’re feeling a little French? Then the “Charles Dog Gaulle” is in order (duck sausage, duck confit, shaved foie gras, red onions, cornichons, dijon mustard.)

Pretty much every corner of the globe is represented here.  For those that aren’t into shocking the taste buds there are a load of domestic “normal” hot dogs here as well.  The portion is pretty generous but the added bonus is the beer lineup. There are always plenty of rotating drafts on hand to wash down your dogs.  Although a little on the pricey side (a python dog set me back about $14), it’s all about the experience so it’s well worth it.  I’ve spent $14 on countless platters I don’t even remember.  However, I’ll always remember my first python dog.

Overall Destination Dogs is a great place to hang with friends, after work happy hour or perhaps a fun date.  Just make sure your date isn’t a picky eater or you won’t get a call back.
