2019 MLK Weekend Celebration at AAMP

January 18 - January 21

2$
Dr. Martin Luther King Weekend

The Civil Rights Movement of MLK’s time—along with activist movements before and since then—inspired partnerships between individual activists and organizations, and various news media outlets. While “mainstream” media often offered a large, broad audience which was uneven in its support of activism, the Black press offered access to a more targeted, sympathetic group of potential supporters and collaborators. Dr. King and other leaders throughout African American history learned when and how to use these media platforms to agitate for justice, alert the world to sometimes hidden truths, and connect individual citizens to the larger discourses that most concern our communities.

In January 2019, the African American Museum in Philadelphia and Citizens Bank invite audiences to join us for a full weekend of enriching, fun, inspirational, family-friendly activities, as we explore the relationship between current and historic social justice movements, and the news media through a series of programs occurring on MLK Day and throughout the preceding weekend. In addition to learning more about the news media and Black movements, this weekend also features opportunities for visitors to sign up for year-round service projects, programs and events that highlight many forms of media (images, songs, movies, podcasts, documentaries, etc) that are produced during social justice movements.

Drop by throughout the weekend to immerse yourself in a program, lose yourself in our galleries, or engage yourself at our service project marketplace!

AAMP’s 2019 MLK Weekend kicks off on Friday, January 18th with a special screening (details to be announced). Then, the weekend continues with a full day of family programming on Saturday, and a Sunday jazz presentation with international vocalist and composer Ruth Naomi Floyd. Monday highlights include the Citizens Bank Scavenger Hunt, a visit from the Phillie Phanatic, and a keynote conversation between writer, producer, and educator Stephanie Renee and journalist, author and producer Alejandro “Ali” Danois, Editor-in-Chief of sports news website The Shadow League.
