Move over Lincoln Financial Field, Wells Fargo and Citizens Bank Park because there’s a new sheriff in town.  Esports is the fastest growing sport (if you can categorize it as such) and Comcast has recognized the trend and plans on capitalizing on it heavily.  Comcast which has its own esports team “The Fusion” is building a $50 million arena next to Xfinity Live!

The official announcement came Monday morning but those in the gaming community knew for quite some time.  The 3,500 seat arena will be the first in the world of its kind.  That’s right Philly will be the trailblazer in the esports world.  The Fusion which is part of a 20 team Overwatch League, will use the dedicated arena but it will also be used as the hub for all major east coast gaming events.

The  new arena is part of a major over hall Comcast Spectacor is conducing at the sports complex in South Philly.  The 47-acre complex will also lay host to a new 10-story office building that will set Comcast back a cool $80 million.

However, when it comes to the Fusion arena, there will be no problem putting butts in seats. The Overwatch League claims that over 40 million folks play the game globally.  In fact they claim that over 400K play within the Philadelphia television market region.  This arena and league will cater to those fans.

The new arena will host approximately 120 gaming events a year.  The rest of the days will be filled up with things such as K-pop concerts and conventions.  Although, it will be home to The Fusion team, Comcast is currently shopping the naming rights.

As for more details of the inside of the new arena, expect many of the same luxuries you’d get at any of the other major sports stadiums including “premium-priced box seats.” That’s right you can watch your favorite gamer do work in plush box seats.

So how well are The Fusion doing this year to warrant a on-of-a-kind stadium?  Well they are currently in third place with a 5-2 record.  The Overwatch League kicked-off last month and will continue until August, so they have plenty of time to clinch first.  The championships will take place in September.
